Summer Wellness: Stay Cool, Stay Safe!
Summer is a time for sunshine, fresh air, and fun—but it also comes with some health risks that are important to manage. At Vibrant Community Health, we want to help you enjoy the season while staying safe and feeling your best.
1. Stay Hydrated: Hot temperatures increase your risk of dehydration, especially during physical activity.
Tips to stay hydrated:
Drink water regularly—even before you feel thirsty.
Carry a reusable water bottle wherever you go.
Add slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries to your water for flavor.
Avoid sugary drinks, caffeine, and alcohol when it's especially hot.
2. Prevent Heatstroke and Heat Exhaustion: Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly and be dangerous, especially for young children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion:
Heavy sweating
Dizziness or confusion
Headache
Nausea
Cold, pale, or clammy skin
If you notice these signs, move to a cooler area, sip water, and rest. If symptoms worsen, call for medical help.
To prevent heatstroke:
Stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas during peak hours (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.).
Wear loose, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply when necessary.
3. Enjoy the Outdoors Safely: Being active outside supports your mental and physical health—but safety comes first.
Tips for safe outdoor fun:
Plan outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day.
Take breaks in the shade or indoors if you’re exercising.
Protect yourself from insect bites by using repellent and checking for ticks after hiking.
Always supervise children around water, even if they know how to swim.
🧡 Vibrant Tip: Look Out for One Another
Check in on neighbours, friends, and family members—especially seniors and those with health concerns. A quick call or visit could make a big difference during a heat wave.
