Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Voices That Inspire

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is Tuesday, December 3, 2024. It serves as a reminder of the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities, amplifying their leadership, and working together toward a more inclusive and sustainable future. The voices of those who experience disability firsthand offer valuable insights into how far we’ve come and how much further we still need to go. Here, we reflect on why this day matters to so many, sharing the powerful thoughts of community members from Vibrant.

Jennifer, Co-Chair of Vibrant’s Community Council, shares her gratitude for the sense of inclusion:
"I’m glad that the International Day of Persons with Disabilities exists. I feel included now, which wasn’t always the case when I was a kid. People with disabilities often face isolation, but at Vibrant, we have a community where everyone belongs."

Anu, Co-Chair of Vibrant’s Community Council talks about the lack of awareness she faced growing up and her drive to change that:
"When I was 13, I first learned about terms related to disabilities. There was no real awareness back then, but now I’m committed to promoting inclusivity and taking steps to make a difference."

This poster was created by the co-chairs of the Vibrant Community Council in recognition of International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Their thoughtful design reflects the importance of inclusivity and leadership in building a sustainable future.

Murray reflects on the barriers he faced in school and how Vibrant has made a difference:
"I faced a lot of stigma and challenges getting into schools and feeling accepted. With Vibrant, I feel comfortable, accepted, and supported in getting the services I need."

Grainne emphasizes the need for more awareness about invisible disabilities:
"There needs to be more awareness, and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities helps with that. People often don’t see the impact of disabilities that aren’t visible. My disability doesn’t stop me from doing daily activities, but it does mean I should be prioritized for the services I need."

Adam highlights how days like this raise awareness and inspire action:
"Days like this help raise awareness. Vibrant is broadcasting a movie for International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and Jen and I are working to represent the voice of people with disabilities, like advocating for Wi-Fi access on the TTC."

Sally looks at the progress that has been made, like the addition of ramps, and the importance of continuing to improve:
"We used to not have ramps to many buildings in Toronto and the neighbourhood, but now we do. It’s a work in progress. International Day of Persons with Disabilities gives people the chance to speak up and address the issues that still need attention."

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusion, support, and awareness. The voices shared here highlight the progress that has been made and the ongoing work needed to ensure everyone, regardless of ability, is valued and supported. By listening to and amplifying the experiences of people with disabilities, we can continue to build a more inclusive and understanding society for all.
