Celebrating Pride Month
Every June, communities across Canada recognize Pride Month and the beginning of Pride Season, a time to celebrate 2SLGBTQI+ communities, honour their contributions, and reflect on the ongoing importance of inclusion, safety, dignity, and belonging.
A crowd walks through downtown Toronto during a Pride march, holding Pride flags near Bloor Street.
Pride is more than a celebration. It is also a reminder of the courage, advocacy, and resilience of people who have worked — and continue to work — for equality, acceptance, and human rights. It is a time to honour those who paved the way, support those who continue to face barriers, and recommit ourselves to creating communities where everyone can live openly and authentically.
Pride also encourages all of us to think about how we can make our spaces more welcoming. A welcoming community is one where people feel accepted without having to hide parts of themselves. This means using respectful language, challenging discrimination, learning from lived experiences, and making sure services and programs are accessible to everyone.
